Château de Pommard Goes biodynamic

04/01/2017

Infused with 300 years of fascinating history, Château de Pommard needs little introduction to Burgundy wine lovers. At the heart of the estate lies the backbone of its affection—the revered terroir of Clos Marey-Monge, designated première cuvée by Jules Lavalle in his Comité de Viticulture de Beaune, 1855.

The winemaker’s philosophy

A passionate and native Burgundian vigneron, Emmanuel Sala has been in charge of all wine production since 2007, a tenure that has yielded the finest wines ever made in the history of the estate, at least so far. Throughout this period, the winemaker has remained true to his vision: “Elevate the vintage, listen to nature and never upset the natural balance”. It is this simple philosophy, as well as a signature technique of blending together five cuvées, that complements the château’s climat, and one that makes Château de Pommard’s estate-produced wines rarely anything less than sublime.

The legacy of Clos Marey-Mongelives on

In May 2016, Château de Pommard restored the name of its walled-enclosed vineyard to its original title – Clos Marey-Monge, a site Burgundy connoisseurs have swooned over for centuries. With the deepest respect for the region’s values, restoring this revered title is “a step towards blending local traditions with forward thinking,” says Michael Baum, owner. “By continuing to honor the legacy of this magnificent landscape, we hope to keep the Château open for another 300 years.”

A Biodynamic Breakthrough

Developing over a series of tiered phases, Château de Pommard has announced its plans to convert fully to biodynamic wine production. Implemented with the consultation of Antoine Lepetit de la Bigne, a specialist in biodynamic production, the pilot phase of the conversion is already underway, trialing on two hectares (five acres). “Biodynamic winemaking will improve the expression and the depth of the terroir of Clos Marey-Monge, within a logical and ecological context,” Antoine says. “By ploughing and maintaining the good soil that we have already, together with our technical know-how of the processes required, we are confident that we will bring about a successful conversion to biodynamic production at Château de Pommard.”
The first organic vintage will be available in 2018.
