Bouey House

23/11/2016
A wind of renewal of the wine world

The Bouey family’s history in the wine took roots in the Medoc region where they purchased their first vineyards in 1821. The trade house has been created in 1958 by Roger Bouey and his sons André and Serge and kept on developing until now while keeping
it’s family character and independance. 2016 marks a turn in its development.

Patrick, Serge et Jacques Bouey

After an international career in management and finances Patrick Bouey decided in 1989 to join his father Serge and his uncle in the family adventure. He already blew a wind of renewal on the house. He fully takes over the reins of the company in 1991 with his brother Jacques, the artistic advisor of the house. The company enters a new era thanks to the development of the sales in bottles to the mass distribution. In 2005 Patrick gives the family house a new name: Maison Bouey.

With a passion for the terroir and the desire to produce its own wines with a quality approach, the house purchases two estates in the Medoc in 1998: Château Lestruelle and Château Maison Blanche, both Crus Bourgeois. Patrick does many works in the vineyards and in the cellars to give the house the means of its ambition to reconnect with the terroir and quality.

In 2009 Patrick Bouey relocates all the premises and offices in one and only place in Ambarès in the outskirts of Bordeaux. It has been a new lever for the development of the company and Patrick launched the ‘360 Plan’. The latter focuses on three guidelines: move upmarket, develop exports, a broad marketing and communication plan.

Premiumisation of the offer

Requirements of quality and elegance are Maison Bouey’s driving forces for the production of wines of excellence.

To highlight the remarkable family terroirs in the Medoc Patrick increased the portfolio of chateaus in 2014 with Château La France Delhomme, Cru Bourgeois. The latter embodies the premiumisation approach of the range ‘Bouey Family Vineyards and Chateaus’. In 2015 he added Château du Mont (Haut-Médoc) and the Crus Bourgeois Château La Ribaud and Château Saint-Yzans.

Since 2007 Patrick works with Stéphane Derenoncourt for all the family estates. Beside the guarantee of quality this collaboration resulted in the creation of unique signature collections like ‘Les Parcelles’.

Maison Bouey respects the nature and the vine with integrated farming. But Maison Bouey does not so much promote the way the wine is crafted as the notion of favourites, trust in the wine grower, personality of the terroir. Therefore the house closely partnered with wine growers whose work the house highlights. It pays tribute to them with the collection ‘Portraits’ in which each wine bears the face of the wine grower who has made it.

To these collections is added the Grand Crus Classés range. And very essence of what the house does best, symbol of the work of excellence, it launched the cuvée Villa des Crus with a modern and refined packaging, with each bottle wrapped in silk paper and delivered in a luxury box.

Ambitious strategy of commercial development

As a logical result of the premiumisation approach Patrick Bouey wished to develop the selective distribution to the top-notch HORECA, private customers and workers committees with the arrival of Benoît Lesueur. A solid development of exports enable to increase the international markets in some sixty countries that now represent 60% of the turnover.

In a creative spirit the house launched new products and concepts like wines of immediate pleasure such as ‘La Vache Rose’. Maison Bouey also crosses the borders of Bordeaux by launching the Southwest collection that plays with the notes of Malbec and Shiraz.

This whole strategy of course means an increased press communication and fair participation. In the first half-year Patrick Bouey has been on the cover of many specialized magazines. He could be seen in the greatest trade fairs of the last months.

Now the house is a modern and dynamic player in the Bordeaux scene while remaining one of the last family-owned and independant houses in the trade. Family estates, exclusive brands, Grands Crus Classés, Maison Bouey strives to promote in France and all over the world a spirit based on talent, quality, confidence and passion for wine.
