2011-2012 Wine MBA session in London

Bordeaux Management School Wine MBA candidates from around the world were in London for two weeks of studies focused on the European and UK wine markets. Educational sessions included lectures from visiting professors and local wine professionals.
Topics of study included Marketing, Wine Markets, Strategic Management, Supply Chain Management and Research Methodology. Wine Intelligence, a UK based wine consumer research group, led several days worth of sessions ranging from Qualitative Research Techniques to the UK on Trade sector. Jancis Robinson, spoke about the importance of Social Media for the Wine Trade. Marian Kopp, Managing Director of Niederkirchener Weinmacher, and Willem Siebelink, Managing Director of Huinck & Co, led sessions on International Wine Marketing. Wine MBA candidates also visited Liv-Ex where Mr. James Miles, founder, spoke on the emerging trade of fine wine as an investment, with the market focused on top growth Bordeaux and Liv-Ex’s role.

During the session, Wine MBA candidates worked in teams to conduct research on London’s vibrant On-Trade & Off-Trade Wine segments and then presented their findings to the other groups as well as Wine Intelligence’s Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Richard Halstead. Candidates also held the second in their “Judgment of…” series at Roberson Wine, where MBA candidate Adam Greene handles fine wine business development. Each candidate chose a wine to be blind-tasted and scored, with the winning wine to be announced later in the term.
The London session appears to have been quite beneficial for all those involved. “I found the in-market workshops particularly interesting. We were able to actively apply the advanced knowledge gained during the courses in practice. It was interesting to look in detail at the on-trade in the UK and The Netherlands and compare approaches with fellow students”, said Nicola Blanchard, Grupo Codorníu, On-Trade Manager Germany & Austria "During the London session a lot of the different pieces came together for me, for instance in the French Paradox business simulation we could work on marketing but had to include supply chain, inventory management and finance at the same time", added Krister Bengtsson, Owner Yomando AB, Sweden.
