Gennaro Buono

Best Sommelier of Italy ASPI 2012
Gennaro Buono, 28 year-old Sommelier at the Resort Hapimag Pentolina, Chiusdino,
in the province of Siena, won the prestigious title of Miglior Sommelier d’Italia ASPI 2012.

The final of this 5th edition of the contest took place on September 22nd in the Galleria Civica of Termoli, Molise. Salvatore Salerno, sommelier at the restaurant Les Berges of the Four Seasons Hotel in Geneva, Switzerland, took the second place while Giacomo Morlacchi, sommelier at the restaurant Il Vino in Courchevel, France, got the third place after very high level tests. Serving a sparkling wine, matching food and wines in a foreign language, decanting, correcting a wine list with errors, blind tasting three wines and identifying five beverages, as well as describing and identifying two different coffees from Nespresso allowed the judges to evaluate the professionalism of the candidates.
And demonstrate once again the seriousness and credibility that made famous the ASPI (Associazione della Sommellerie Professionale Italiana), headed by Giuseppe Vaccarini, Best Sommelier of the World 1978.
An international panel of judges had been gathered for that event, comprising Piero Sattanino, Best Sommelier of the World 1971; Giorgio Grai, world famous oenologist; Michèle Chantôme, president of the newborn Association des Sommeliers du Maroc (ASMA) and in charge of the PR, Communication & Marketing Committee of the Association de la Sommellerie Internationale (A.S.I.) of which the ASPI is the only Italian member; Karina Tholin, president of SommelierFöreningen in Sweden; Dashamir Elezi, President of the Association of Sommeliers of Albania; and Kostas Touloumtzis, Honorary President of the A.S.I.
For the first time, the Gran Premio Tintilia e Vitigni Autoctoni was organized to improve the knowledge about the Tintilia, indigene grape variety of Molise and went to Antonio Garofolin, Sommelier and teacher at the Istituto Alberghiero di Rovereto, while the Prize of the Best Taster went once again to Gennaro Buono.
The next big appointment with the Italian Sommellerie will be next year in September in Sanremo where the Contest A.S.I. of the Best Sommelier of Europe 2013 will be organized with the logistical support of ASPI. A very interesting program will be soon available on www.mse2013.eu.
