Interview of Jean-Philippe Delmas

Chairman of the Top Ranked Growth
of Graves Association

Nous n’étions pas à Hong Kong…

he Chairman, Jean-Philippe Delmas,
explains us why Vinexpo Hong Kong
was not yet on the agenda of the Top Ranked
Growths of Graves Association...

“We are Top Ranked Growths of Graves located in the Pessac-Léognan appellation that was created in 1953 and confirmed in 1959. This AOC [controlled appellation] is known in France and in Europe, but as soon as we go to other continents, we do not have neither the repute (I place Haut-Brion apart), nor the anteriority of the communes of the Médoc or even Saint-Emilion. We prefer to focus on our traditional markets, gain their loyalty and strengthen our renown. It has not to be forgotten that we are only 16 classed growths and 13 owners, with no doubt a lucky number for one of the smallest collective group of Bordeaux. We can be pleased of our success in the great restaurant trade, where we find our wines with a price/qualiy ratio that is quite reasonable for the connoisseurs and interesting for the restaurant owners. About the 2009 vintage, for the first time I think, the critics are unanimous on the quality of the Pessac-Léognan wines, in red as in white. A recognition by professionals, journalists and great tasters that is extremely rewarding compared to the efforts we have made. From now on we belong to the elite of the quality great wines.

The 'Primeurs' system of Bordeaux is fabulous in itself. 2009 is an exceptional vintage, which, with a limited yield for each of our crus and more and more numerous customers, runs the risk of being inflationary and perhaps, for some crus, creating a speculative bubble, particularly for the 50 leader brands of Bordeaux. We hold our image, our brands, but in the Primeurs system we have no distribution networks : indeed, the 'price' machine can race. But when you see for the moment the ex-cellar prices of the Château Carbonnieux at 50 cts more than in 2008 in white and with increase of 20% for the red! Let's set things back in the context... 20% more than in 2008 with a start price at 13,50€, that is a Primeur price of only 16€! We still have a good price ratio for the restauration trade. One has to understand that a 20% rise on a wine of 15€ has not the same impact than 20% more on a launch price at 150€. Our wines (except Haut-Brion) are placed in a reasonable market. The 2009 has a real Primeur value, but we will have to manage the shortage as we know that there is demand. It is certain that, for the restaurateurs and great connoisseurs, having the cash to anticipate the Primeurs will be fundamental. This vintage can only gain in value in the coming... even very close... years.”
