Courtyard by Marriott Montpellier – April 15th, 2013

On April 15th, in the very modern setting of the hotel Courtyard by Marriott in Montpellier, SommelierS International gathered a panel of sommeliers from the Associations Languedoc-Roussillon Southern Rhone Valley and Midi-Pyrénées, as well as some Parisians, to taste 188 cuvees and meet the representatives of the 106 houses which made them.

The Courtyard by Marriott is considered as one of the most beautiful hotels in Montpellier regarding its modern architecture due to Jean Nouvel’s talent. Just steps from the bustling city centre with its shops and restaurants, the hotel offers 123 rooms, a relaxing spa, a swimming pool and a fitness centre. The historic area, the congress hall, the Fabre museum and all other sites of interest in the centre of Montpellier are nearby.

Michel Hermet, president of the UDSF, shared the honours of the event with Philippe Faure-Brac, Best Sommelier of the World, and Olivier Bompas, president of the Association of Sommeliers of Languedoc-Roussillon Southern Rhone Valley, accompanied by number of its members. The latter has masterfully orchestrated the works of the sommeliers whose expertise has done wonders as the tasting morning was studious and intense.

Arc International, partner of the A.S.I., also contributed to the success of the happening by providing kindly all the glasses.

By late morning, once the professional tasting completed and all the comments put down in writing, the sommeliers were joined, around a very lively buffet lunch, by the producers, the representatives or the cellar masters of the Houses that had sent their samples.

The Chef had excelled by proposing creative salty or sweet treats: Plancha of duck breast on onion jam, Beef Carpaccio marinated in lemony oil, Gambas skewers coated with gingerbread crumbs, Hot goat's cheese with honey on toast, ice-cream Zucchini and vegetable Tartare, Panna Cotta with coconut milk and almonds, macaroons, canneles, verrines of fresh fruits … a real delight!

After this very pleasant interlude, the sommeliers who have had the responsibility—but also the honour and pleasure—to comment the wines during the morning tasting, were able to share their feelings with the wine makers. In a convivial and relaxed atmosphere, everyone could freely taste the bottles exhibited all around the room, go from one group to another, participate in an interview or enjoy the sunny terrace.

SommelierS International deeply thanks all the sommeliers and producers who took part in this event.
