Château La Grâce Dieu des Prieurs

9/10/2018
where wine and art meet

Château La Grâce Dieu des Prieurs is located not far from the belfries of Saint-Emilion and Pomerol, it was founded in 1885 and has a complex soil consisting of brown sand, clay and chalk.

L'architecte Jean Nouvel et le propriétaire, Andrei Filatov.

Its 9 hectares of vineyards includes one hectare dedicated to Chardonnay with the rest divided up between 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, no less than 60,000 Saint-Emilion 'Grand Cru' grape-vines are cultivated on its grounds.

The estate has been subjected to a major refurbishment between 2014 and 2017. The simple objective was to respect the region's French wine-growing heritage whilst totally modernising technical resources allowing for the introduction of innovative wine-production processes.

Château La Grâce Dieu des Prieurs employs a team of the best experts whose job it is to ensure that it produces only exceptional wines, they all share the same common values: respect for the vines themselves (sustainable agriculture, the use of the twin-line pruning technique), the pleasure of producing only exceptional wines and the will to perpetuate secular know-how.

Behind these changes are the consultant Louis Mitjavile and the architect Jean Nouvel who have recreated an architectural complex that is at once functional and a work of art in itself. Reconstructing the estate with its buildings positioned as if to recreate the open courtyard of a traditional farm in the midst of the vineyards has provided the means to introduce innovative technology whilst maintaining its historic aspect. The same can be said for the wine cellars which guarantee the respect for viticulture with their cylindrical form.

Great Russian Art

Andrei Filatov has been the owner since 2014 and is also the founder of the Russian Art Foundation which collects the works of 19th and 20th century Russian and Soviet painters, he had the idea of using works from this collection for the design of the estate's wine labels. From Ilia Répine to Geli Korjev not forgetting the Tkachev brothers, a single ambition drives the Château La Grâce Dieu des Prieurs: reveal the genuine diversity of Russian art trends. Russian Art is a real meeting place for wine and Art, between two different cultures that join together to develop an entirely new sense of renaissance.

To highlight its vintages the Domaine La Grâce Dieu des Prieurs has combined tradition with modernity whilst ensuring that the character and essence of its wines is what really stands out. The Russian Art collection bottles are shorter but broader than most used these days, they remind us of the codes of that ancestral continent and enhance the beauty of the works of these Russian Artists. They are also available in presentation boxes made with typical materials from the estate, wood and concrete become a modern backdrop to the bottles. With their curved and pure form and the harmony of the materials used, they are genuine 'objets d'art'.

The French-Russian Alliance

To promote the estate's desire to combine the French and Russian cultures it presented each member of the French National Team with a unique case of Russian Art Saint-Emilion Grand Cru on the 15 July 2018 to commemorate their World Cup Victory. "We would like to sincerely congratulate Didier Deschamps and the French National Team whose victory was so well-deserved and logical [...] " declared Andreï Filatov. A beautiful gesture which will help the players to remember the country where they achieved their great victory.
