Artists’ lives often reveal to be as fascinating as their work and Pierre Auguste Renoir is no exception to the rule. The old village of Essoyes, built on the banks of the Ource river in the Aube region, even if not much mentioned in the numerous books about Renoir, played a key role in his career and personal life.

At 130 kilometers South of Bordeaux, in La Bastide d’Armagnac, in the Landes, Martine Lafitte perpetuates with passion and devotion the family-owned estate created in 1807. Five generations succeeded to defend the true values and knowledge of THE Armagnac.

“The best Cognac you've ever heard of… is AUDRY” concluded Alice Feiring in her article on Cognac in Time Magazine in December 2005. Five years later, thanks to Bernard Boisson's commitment to the House, founded in 1878 by Edmond Audry, his great-great-grandfather, Audry came out of anonymity. 

In Romery, a few kilometers away from the capital of Champagne, Epernay, the House Tribaut-Schloesser is born in 1929 from the union of Jean Tribaut with Suzanne Schloesser, both coming from wine grower families. Both are now nearly 80 and it is with energy and enthusiasm that they welcome the visitors in a tasting room which dimensions have no other equal than its character.

Moët & Chandon Grand Vintage 2002, released in the full bloom of maturity, is the house’s first Grand Vintage since the 1930s to be aged for seven years. Moët & Chandon’s tradition has been a five-year ageing period and the legal minimum is three. Born in the secret of our Crayères*, Veuve Clicquot Cave Privée is the fruit of a crazy innovation, intuition and passion but also of the tenacity of the oenologists of the House.  For more than 30 years, they have been making these vintage wines, orchestrating their evolution, making sure to respect and exalt the unique character of each of them, guided by the wild dream of being able one day to reveal them to worldwide's connoisseurs.

The Beaucastel family, who were then protestants, had settled in Courthézon by the middle of the sixteenth century. In 1687, Pierre de Beaucastel was appointed “Capitaine de la Ville de Courthézon” by the French king Louis XIV, in recognition of his conversion to catholicism following the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes. Two centuries later, during the phylloxera crisis, the owner of Beaucastel was Elie Dussaud, who was also one of Ferdinand de Lessep’s team during the building of the Suez canal. At that time the vineyard ceased production.

Agrandi, en 1905, du Domaine de Lacombe puis, en 1974, du Clos Lacombe, le Château “Le Caillou” appartenait, depuis plus d'un siècle, à la famille Bélivier de Pomerol qui le transmet, en 1975, à la famille Lucien Giraud.  Aujourd’hui, c’est André Giraud qui conduit cette propriété, en apportant depuis 25 ans un soin tout particulier à la qualité de ses vins.

Nestled in the Provence were Michel Tardieu was born and that he cherished, the Tardieu-Laurent house is now the entire property of the family Tardieu – Michèle, Michel, Camille and Bastien. In buying all the shares, they also took over the name "Tardieu-Laurent". Today, Michel Tardieu is the only to be in charge of the trade.

The Charlois Group now means 3 stave mills (Maison Charlois, Nièvre Merrain and Normandie Merrain), 4 cooperages (Berthomieu/Ermitage, Saury, Leroi and Erable) and 1 sawmill (Malviche) for a total 60 million euros turnover, of which 75 % from export.

The director of Château de Malleret, Bruno Von der Heyden, has a passion for fine wines, conceiving and producing them as if nurturing children. On an exceptional terroir, with childhood memories still vivid, he takes his inspiration from his surroundings ensuring that each vintage is worthy of being part of the family.

It was love at first sight and innovative vision that prompted the Auger family to acquire the Château de Môle in 2006. The idea was to develop luxury wine tourism. Eric Auger, coming from a family of farmers who had passed on to him their love of the land and of wine, wanted visitors to discover the life of a wine chateau.

The family domain in Saint-Emilion produces a distinguished, feminine wine, rich and powerful, the result of the passionate work and the long-term vision of Guy Meslin, descendant of the vineyard’s founder. Made with passion, this fine wine fully expresses its terroir.

In 2001, Sébastien Bazin, representing the private international real estate investment firm Colony Capital, became a major shareholder in Chateau Lascombes with the aim of restoring nobility to Château Lascombes Second Cru Classé. In choosing Dominique Befve and his long-term colleagues, Delphine Barboux and Michel Rolland, the owners knew how to put together the ideal team. They are now reaping the fruits of a challenge brilliantly met -  a grand second cru worthy of the Margaux appellation.

Château Montdoyen, nestled in the Perigord in the commune of Monbazillac, produces more than just very good dessert wines. For Monbazillac is just one of the satellites of the AOC Bergerac wine growing area, an area which has considerable potential and is starting to become known to a few privileged initiates.

To go from Grand Cru Classé to Premier Grand Cru classé in 2006, the domain, now counted as one of Saint-Emilion’s prestigious vineyards, needed a  return to rigour and streamlined management. Nicolas Thienpont is the master­mind behind this meteoric rise of an already exceptional terroir.

Few people know this garden. Encircled by high walls, protected by an imposing gate, it lies away from prying eyes, on the edge of a peaceful village, on the Southeastern slope of the Montagne de Reims. Here, in the soft Northern light, exposed to view, it is the focus of all attention.

Champagne Louis Casters, well known in the Flemish region of Belgium owing to the family's Flemish roots, is built on family values and traditional methods that are rare these days, resisting the pressure to expand too quickly.

For Sophie Signolle, owner of Champagne Michel Gonet, the Champagne trade should be based on the values of luxury and pleasure. And excellence comes at a price.

Quality, tradition and consistency are the values upheld by the Jacques Chaput brand. Jack Chaput, the youngest son, has returned breathing inspired genius into the family estate.

The Maison Dartigalongue, founded in 1838 in Nogaro in the Gers department, is one of the last remaining family-run Armagnac houses of merchant-producers in the Bas-Armagnac. The estate is masterfully managed by Françoise Dartigalongue, a fifth-generation producer.

In Bordeaux’s winegrowing area there are certain professionals who have drawn inspiration from trends abroad in order to boost their own business.  Patrick Meynard is one of these.  After an initial career as a chartered accountant up until 2005, this company director from Bordeaux successfully took over a family bottle packaging business and at the same time also purchased Château Lalaudey in Moulis en Médoc.  

Patrick Coste took over the family estate and decided to become an independent winegrower.  A new sense given to his professional life, already crowned with success by the interest shown for his Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Côtes du Rhône wines by eminent sommeliers.

Discreetly protected by the anonymity of the domain’s entrance, on the Place du Murget in Meursault, Albert Grivault’s heirs continue their ancestor’s venture.  They are located in the heart of the winegrowing area in Meursault.  Their address alone is symbolic, since the Place du Murget bears a name directly linked to vine growing.

The winegrowing area of Lalande de Pomerol has undoubtedly undergone many trials and tribulations over the course of the past three centuries, but one estate here has managed to make a fresh start by banking everything upon the quality of its natural environment.  Château des Annereaux, one of the oldest domains in this appellation, has continued to augment the quality of its wines since Dominique Hessel took over the management of this estate in 2004.

In the heart of Pessac lies an isle of peace and luxuriant greenery, in stark contrast to the urban turmoil of this area on the outskirts of Bordeaux.  Turning their sights away from the Gonet family stronghold in Champagne, lured by the charm of this magnificent Pessac-Léognan terroir...

Were vines grown in Moselle before Burgundy?  It is difficult to say, since traces of Roman vineyards have been found in both regions.  During the 4th century, the poet Ausone sang the praises of Moselle and its vineyards, whilst the reputation of Burgundy wines shone far beyond their region of origin.

Pouilly Fuissé is a pearl of light in the midst of the Mâcon winegrowing area.  The historic Solutré rock looms over this appellation which rivals with the finest in Burgundy.  Chardonnay, perhaps one of the most debased varieties in the world, here brings delicious elegance to wines of this region.

The history of this domain sinks its roots back to the most ancient sources, to the Cistercian monks of Citeaux who, during the 12th century, were responsible for reviving the Burgundy winegrowing area, including of course Clos de Vougeot, now the emblematic, but not unique vestige of this period.  We find ourselves in Meursault, in a castle, a real castle constructed during the 19th century in place of the outbuildings of Château de Citeaux.

Although Burgundy has acquired a reputation for wine production dating back to Gallo-Roman times, at each period in history, the wine trade has always adapted itself to the local community.  The Maison Champy welcomes visitors to wander through its 15th century cellars in Beaune and listen to details of the firm’s 300 year-old history.

A policy of individual winemaking and a segmented business strategy have turned this “cellar” away from purely financial considerations and removed its reputation of being a producer of low-end-of-the-range wines.  Since 2000, the simple cooperative cellar the UDPSE was at the origin has successfully extended its activities in view of promoting the appellation and ensuring that its wines are given an excellent position on supermarket shelves.

Two centuries of existence for the family-owned firm Champagne Henriot, now one of the rare, wholly independent Champagne Houses, which proudly asserts this fact…

At the peak of the Médoc peninsula, at an altitude of 43 metres at its highest point, is the commune of Listrac, known also as the “rooftop of the Médoc”.  We find ourselves amidst hillcrests comprised of Pyrenean pebbles, 35 kilometres to the west of Bordeaux at the head office of Château Liouner.

Jean-Marc Maugey, wine estate owner in Arveyres (33) and with his misleading air of being a self-taught man, bombards you in the most natural way in the world with an extremely rural type of wisdom, which results from years of working with vines, his broad-minded attitude, not to mention his generosity and natural conviviality.

Near Saint-Emilion, in Saint-Etienne-de-Lisse, nestles a vineyard that produces silky, extremely well-balanced wines.  In 2003, winegrowers Mr and Mrs Lavau handed over the management of this estate to a worthy successor, their youngest son, Pierrick Lavau.

In the area of Bas Armagnac, a large number of producers are keen to ensure high quality.  One such enterprising professional is 35-year-old Stéphane de Luze, who is company director of the firm established by his ancestor Raoul de Pichon-Longueville in 1864.

Four centuries mark this patronymic which is so closely linked to the history of Saint-Emilion… The description given by Guy Petrus-Lignac, manager of Château Guadet (formerly named Château Guadet Saint Julien) is an invitation to take a voyage into the history of wine.

A Graves Great Classified Growth of international renown, its exceptional historical heritage.  A pioneer for luxury wine tourism, also dealing in associated activities, the success of this estate spans worldwide … Château Smith Haut Lafitte no longer needs an introduction reputed equally for its wines and for its famous wine therapy concept!

Since 1953, Martine Lafitte has been at the head of this family-owned Armagnac firm founded by her ancestors in 1807.  As heiress, she represents the fifth generation to cultivate this clay-limestone terroir, extracting a round, fruity Armaganc.

t will probably never be said enough… “Wine is made in the vineyard!” Jean-Bernard Delmas will tell you this time and time again.  In 2006, he acquiesced to the pressing request of Martin Bouygues and is now responsible for the management of Château Montrose, a Médoc Second Growth, classified in 1855.

The current owner of Château Laroze, a Saint-Emilion Great Classified Growth, Guy Meslin, comes from a long ancestry of winegrowers whose origin dates back to Mr and Mrs Gurchy, founders of this estate in 1610. Guy Meslin, who has managed this domain since 1990, explains its new visual identity.

Mr Amart is currently making tremendous efforts to win over markets in Asia.  His most recent trips abroad prove this: Peking, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Singapore … Untiringly, he travels to major cities of the world in search of new brokers.
