European expertise joins South African resources in a quest to create the “First Growth of the Cape”

The newly established wine producer 4G Wines takes an unorthodox and unique approach in its absolute ‘quality over quantity’ standard. The international team is striving to bring the “First Growth of the Cape” out into the world. European wine making expertise, perfect craftsmanship and innovative technologies are combined with South Africa’s keen, inspired young winemakers and outstanding natural resources—drawing from the best of the Old and the New World. The result promises to be the peak of excitement that connoisseurs can enjoy from the launch in October 2011.

The realm of excellence is upheld by legendary wine makers Denis Dubourdieu and Giorgio Dalla Cia, who team up with the young South African talents Mari de Jager and Mia Fischer.

A legend in his own, Denis Dubourdieu is a scientist, vineyard owner and wine maker. As a consultant to many estates, with Cheval Blanc, Château Yquem and Hermitage La Chapelle amongst his clients, he has been the godfather to icon wines scoring up to 100 points.

Italian-born winemaker Giorgio Dalla Cia is renowned for his work at Meerlust and having created the first Bordeaux-style blend in South Africa, the iconic Rubicon, which made him South Africa's Champion Winemaker in 1980 and producer of the best red blend in the world in 2006, to name but a few.

The individual vines are precisely selected from the best terrain in more than 10 different vineyards across South Africa’s Cape region. The extremely labour and cost intensive treatment of vines all along the growth cycle allows radical optimization. The wine matures over 18 months in individually selected 100% new French oak barrels.

4G Wines’ debut as a boutique winery is the Private Preview 2009, produced for friends and family only.

Further refined and rounded-off, G. 2010 is now the masterpiece that settles to become the “First Growth of the Cape”. Its style displays the strength of a New World climate, whilst showing complexity and finesse as known from some of the best European wines. “We strive to produce a wine that is very intense and powerful, though displaying detail in flavour to an extent I haven’t yet experienced in South African wines”, Denis Dubourdieu describes his newest creation.

Limited to 3,410 bottles only, G. 2010 is a Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz based blend with some Merlot and Cabernet Franc.

The bouquet accentuates spicy, peppery aromas with notes of eucalyptus and artichokes, over a discreet background of dried plums and cassis that mingles with leathery flavours. In an overwhelmingly full-bodied attack, the taste carries all kinds of dark berries and hints of juniper, showing tremendous ripeness in a powerful yet lovely balanced way. Deeply integrated tannins provide a lengthy finish, catering for an extraordinary ageing potential.
