Château Lanessan

a woman in control

Château Lanessan is an estate of 75 hectares in the AOC Haut-Médoc. Its history dates back the 14th century and is closely linked to the Bouteiller family. When Hubert Bouteiller retired after having run the domain for 30 years, the family decided to choose somebody from outside.

Paz Espejo thus took over the management of the château in 2009. Spanish, born and trained in Madrid, she arrived in Bordeaux in 1991 to study enology. Her studies and experiences led her at the service of great merchants of Bordeaux like Calvet or Cordier. Experienced professional with an excellent knowledge of the markets but also the wines themselves, she brought a wind of change at Lanessan that had always been managed by the family.

She implemented eco-friendly approaches in the vineyard becoming a member of the association for the Environmental Management System created by the CIVB. In 2015, Lanessan committed in the process to get the certification of High Environmental Value Level 3.

She also worked to renew the image of Lanessan by changing the labels, choosing the orange colour and the logo DB. The idea was to root Lanessan in the modernity, mark a new era while preserving the historical values that built up its reputation.

Paz Espejo also spends much energy in developing wine tourism at Lanessan. Renovation of the Horse Museum with its collection of open carriages, extension of the reception rooms, open-door days, many actions aiming at highlighting the other side of Lanessan: the architecture, the gardens, the stables.

Paz Espejo is a comely, friendly and dynamic person in Bordeaux' sphere. A sturdy character who managed to impose herself among the men thanks to her energy and skills.
