Champagne Marquis de Pomereuil

La vie en rose

Located in the heart of the Riceys vineyard, the Marquis de Pomereuil capitalizes on the Pinot Noir’s qualities like nobody else, in the form of sparkling pink champagnes, or still champagne wines such as the renowned but un-sung Rosé des Riceys.

Did you say “marquis”? Indeed! up Until the French Revolution, the Pommereu family held the title of Marquis in the village of Les Riceys. When the winemakers, who had been working together since 1922, decided to produce their own brand in the seventies, they drew their inspiration from history and christened the brand “Marquis de Pomereuil”. Since then, they have been intent on showering their “divine marquis” with medals. Even recently. In 2009, the 2000 Cuvée des Fondateurs won a gold medal at the General Agricultural Competition and the champagne Rosé Brut has just won silver in 2010.
The house offers two versions of pink champagne in accordance with the two champagne techniques possible - cuvée blending and maceration. The first, a rosé brut, makes the most of the intensity of Pinot Noir whilst being toned down with Chardonnay (11%) and Pinot Meunier (7%).

Its color is the result of the addition of red wine (11 to 12%). “It is a pleasing champagne, round and retaining a certain freshness” says Christian Jojot, who presides over the brand's destiny. The second takes full advantage of the Riceys terroir and its Pinot Noir grapes. The house keeps things simple: a 100% Pinot Noir, low dosage (0,9%), a wine for connoisseurs that has been aged for 3 years in the cellars. The grapes, half of them de-stemmed and half in whole bunches, undergo short maceration. The vines destined to produce colored wines are selected with great care.
An average age of 30 years, south-facing, moderate yields, sorting during harvest... “The grapes have to be perfect,” sums up Christian Jojot. As for the famous Rosé des Riceys, its reputation makes it a must-have. It takes the best from its parcels: 50-years old vines and a yield of 8 to 9 000 kg/ha. A wine of kings! The story goes that Louis XIV came to discover and appreciate this wine thanks to labourers from Les Riceys who built the Château de Versailles....
Around fifty winegrowers work using integrated viticultural methods on about a hundred hectares. The precious Chardonnays are reserved for the Cuvée des Fondateurs. It excels in the great vintages. The proof was in 2000.
