A.S.I.  Austria

Kazuyoshi Kogai, from Japan, is elected as President of the Asi

Kogai
Gathered in Austria
for a congress held from September 30th to October 2nd 2007,
representatives of member countries of the ASI (Association of the Sommelier Profession Worldwide)
had to elect a new management team.  Three years after the election as President of Kostas Touloumtzis,
from Greece, it was time for change.  After some very open debates,
at times lively and often heated,
each candidate presented his project
for the next three years to come.
The outgoing President was candidate for his own succession,
whereas Kazuyoshi Kogai,
at the head of a more open list,
had the advantage of the withdrawal
of the Canadian candidate,
Jean-Yves Bernard.
Elected by a large majority, Kazuyoshi Kogai, 61, has been a member of the ASI board for the past ten years and is responsible for teams of sommeliers at the fifty establishments that belong to the ‘Prince Hôtel’ chain in Japan. “He recommends returning to the principles of those who initially founded the ASI.  This means taking a more associative approach, as opposed to a business attitude”, pointed out Philippe Faure-Brac“He especially wants to encourage national associations to take more responsibility and attach greater importance to the nomination of a Vice-President per continent.  France’s role and therefore Serge Dub’s, will be to re-launch the European competition, for which Ruinart no longer wishes to take responsibility.”

Serge Dubs – Vice-President of the ASI for the European Continent, and Philippe Faure-Brac – Treasurer

The presence of two French representatives, both of whom have won the title of the ‘World’s Best Sommelier’, within the management team of the ASI is also an excellent sign. Philippe Faure-Brac, (‘Le Bistrot du Sommelier’ in Paris), already a member of the previous management team, now progresses from Deputy to the position of Treasurer and Serge Dubs, (‘L’Auberge de l’Ill’ in Illhaeusern), becomes Vice-President of the ASI for the European continent.  “In fact, this position falls to France and logically to the current President of its national association.”

Another important change is the cancellation of the position of General Manager.  Guiseppe Vaccarini will complete the duration of his contract next spring, but will not be replaced.  Assisted by Enrico Bernardo, he will attempt to reunite his transalpine colleagues within the ‘ASPI’ (Association of Professional Italian Sommeliers).

A group that brings together two countries: Finland and Ukraine.

Albania, Lithuania, Latvia and the new Italian association benefit from observer status.

Lastly, those present at this congress meeting confirmed the choice of Chile for the organisation, in 2010, of the forthcoming World competition.

Following 1992’s contest held in Brazil, which saw the victory of Philippe Faure-Brac, it will be the second time the South-American continent will organise such an event. It will provide a perfect opportunity for wine producers to further assert the quality image of their winegrowing areas at various tasting sessions which will be organised as fringe events as the competition unfolds.

Michelin 2008: Pascal Borrel uses his cuisine to promote wine

Maury was until now, and will perhaps remainfor a long time still, the name of an appellation that produces sun-filled, fortified wines, whose generous character has often led sommeliers to recommend matching them with chocolate desserts.

Primeurs 2009Bordelais

Just call me ‘9’… ‘009’

SommelierS International wished to underline, in this series of articles about 'Bordeaux', the particular climatic conditions of the vintage 2009, the atmosphere of the “Primeurs” and a report on the field. One cannot write the word “Primeurs” without evoking the expectation of the first selling prices.
